Chapter Four

April Marris was working out on the boxing bag, finishing up her intense regimen. She was sure to stay in tip-top shape, despite semiretirement. Her mind went to the phone call from the other day and to her boss, Pierre. She was caught between wanting to help a friend and the need to remain undetected. How could she assist without exposing her past profession or her life before Mercy, South Carolina?

She finished up and then walked off the mats, sat on the floor, and guzzled down some water. She leaned against the padded wall and looked around the place. Her medium-sized beach house had a large room off the garage that she’d turned into a complete workout room. She kept it locked up and secured even though she never had anyone over. She was always so busy, or at least that was the role she played, pretending to travel some or work from home and at remote locations doing finance and banking for various companies. It had been a pretend position she knew a lot about and had maintained the façade for some time.

So when she bumped into a guy in Mercy she knew from the Joint Terrorist Task Force, Case, who did jobs undercover involving drugs and illegal imports, she was shocked to learn about an investigation he was doing right here in Mercy. The kicker was finding out one of the guys being investigated was Cavanaugh, Amelia’s boyfriend. The agents he was working with, ones she knew, found out she lived here, and, of course, she was seen with Amelia, and they contacted her. April only knew Amelia from Afina and Kai. She had barely been around when she was involved with Cavanaugh, and April didn’t ever remember meeting him. Of course that made her an even better contact person for this investigation.

When she’d worked for the government and the NYPD in a special operations unit, she was involved in everything from tracking down terrorist cells, confiscating guns and other devices that could be used to create bombs, and other intense operations that ultimately led her to getting shot and nearly killed. She was well trained, and her time held prisoner with two other agents she was working with had been two days of hell she would never forget. Her ability to speak several languages came in handy though, and she knew when they were concerned about a rescue operation and getting infiltrated by soldiers, and sure enough, that was what happened.

Pierre located the boat before they reached land. It was also when he found out that the two men she worked with were the reason why they’d gotten caught. They double-crossed the agency, and in the midst of the exchange of gunfire, she was shot twice, once by each man, but she killed them, hitting them in the head one after the other. Her friend Evan, a Navy Seal, died that day, but the rest of his team lived because of her. She swallowed hard. Although
